Thousands of lights are about to bathe Florence in a warm glow as Christmas approaches. This year, the Christmas Markets are returning to Florence from Nov. 30 to Dec.16 every day from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.
Piazza Santa Croce will transform into a giant German Christmas market for the eleventh edition of the event, with about 55 wooden houses of products from more than a dozen European countries.
Crafts and foods from the Alpine regions, such as delicious grilled sausages, hot mulled wine, beer, sweets and decorated gingerbread will surely make the beginning of the cold season more enjoyable.
The event, however, is not exclusively German. Locally-made Italian crafts and foods will also be sold in the market.
This tradition was born in Northern Europe with its origins in the Santa Claus legends; it subsequently spread throughout Europe, embedding itself in rural towns and villages, where it grew in popularity, until finally reaching larger cities such as Florence.
